HOME/SCHOOL COMPACT

The School of International Studies and the parents of the students participating in activities, services, and programs funded by Title I, part A for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) (participating children), agree that this compact outlines how the parents, the entire school staff, and the students will share responsibility for improved student academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership that will help children achieve California’s high standards.

The Home/School Compact is in effect during school year 2008-2009.

School Responsibilities

The School of International Studies will:

  1. Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables participating children to meet California’s student academic achievement standards as follows:

The school will offer International Baccalaureate Diploma and Certificate curriculum to 11th and 12th grade students.  This rigorous, international curriculum will be supported by in school and after school tutoring. Additionally, teachers will differentiate the curriculum and use a variety of teaching strategies to support all students in the classroom.  Achievement via Individual Determination (AVID) and IB (International Baccalaureate) Support classes will be offered to students as well as Connections, an advisory class focused on supporting student achievement through personalization and goal setting.

  1. Hold parent-teacher conferences as needed during which time this compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child’s achievement.

Parents have the right to request a conference with their child’s teacher(s) or the principal.  Parents should contact the school to schedule a date and time convenient to all participants. During the first semester Open House, parents will be able to sign up for individual conferences. Student Support Team (SST) meetings will be held as requested by either counselors, teachers, or parents.

  1. Provide parents with frequent reports on their child’s progress.

Parents will receive progress reports mailed to their home every six weeks for semester courses and every 4 ˝ weeks for quarter courses. Parents may receive additional reports of their child’s progress by requesting a report from individual teachers or contacting the school counselors. Using Zangle, teachers will post student grades for viewing.

  1. Provide parents with reasonable access to staff.

Parents can contact teachers via email or phone.  The school website will publish teacher email addresses and classroom phone numbers for staff members.  During the first week of school, teachers will provide parents with a course syllabus which will include individual staff office hours. Staff members will be available for parent conferences during their preparation period as well as before and after school.

  1. Provide parents opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class and to observe classroom activities, as follows:

Parents are welcome to volunteer in the School of International Studies. A volunteer form is located in room 806, the school office. Parents are welcome to observe classroom activities provided the time and date of the visitation is arranged in advance with the school.
