Attendance Policy

Prompt attendance in class is important for academic success; therefore, it is expected that all students will attend classes daily and be on time.

The only bells that will ring at the San Diego High Educational Complex will be for the start of the day, the end of lunch, and the end of the day.  No other bells will ring since the 6 schools at the Complex are on different schedules.  Students need to be aware of the time and get to class on time.

In the case that students are not in class on time, the following procedures will take effect:

Absences

Students missing class or arriving 30 or more minutes late for class without a valid pass will be marked ABSENT.

It is the student's responsibility to clear absences with the School Clerk. This is done by having a parent or guardian call or write a note to the School Clerk located in Room 806 between 7:00 A.M. and 3:30 P.M. Absences must be cleared within three days as mandated by district policy or they will be considered Truancies.  When a student returns to school after an absence, he/she goes directly to class unless otherwise directed.

The following categories of absence will be applied:

1.                            (I) Excused absence due to illness, medical, or dental appointment. The responsibility for obtaining and completing missed work rests entirely with the student.

2.                            (E) Excused absence for personal reasons. The responsibility for obtaining and completing missed work rests entirely with the student at the discretion of the teacher.

3.                            (U) Unexcused absence with the knowledge of parents but for reasons not approved by the district. The responsibility for obtaining and completing missed work rests entirely with the student at the discretion of the teacher.

4.                            (Z) Truant is an absence not approved by the parents or the school. Students will not receive credit for missed work.

See the section on Consequences for Truancies.

Extended absences from five to twenty days require the student to obtain a “contract independent study form” from the School Clerk.

Independent Study Contracts for Extended Absences

If a student will be absent for 5 or more days, a Short term Independent Study Contract agreement is available so that a student may receive credit, and the school will receive ADA during the absence.  Contracts are available from the School Clerk.  Contract must be submitted to the School Clerk at least five days before the planned absence and must have administration’s approval.  After the contract is completed, it must be returned to the School Clerk for processing.  The contract will then be forwarded to the teacher for evaluation of the assignments.

Test Avoidance

A student who shows a pattern of absences on days where assignments are due or tests are given will be referred to the counselor.  Assignments or tests may be recorded as zero points.

See the addendum for a complete copy of the Academic Honesty Policy.

Losing Credit due to Absences

A student who misses more than 5 days of a class and does not make up the time at Saturday School may receive NO CREDIT for the class.

Consequences for Truancies

The parent, counselor, and Connections teacher will be notified and the student will be assigned Saturday School for each truancy.  The student’s citizenship grade will be lowered (1 Truancy = N, 2 Truancies = U); they may fail the course and they may not be allowed to participate in school events/activities.

Tardies

Students who arrive in class after the class begins are Tardy.

Tardies to school are considered excused only for medical or legal reasons.  Excuses must be in the form of a parents’ phone call or note to the School Clerk. Oversleeping, transportation problems, or personal excuses cannot be accepted.

Students arriving 30 or more minutes late for class will be marked ABSENT.  If not cleared, a period truancy will be recorded.

Consequences for Tardies

1st Tardy

·                                 Teacher will hold a conference with student and find out why he/she is late to class. Student is warned regarding not being late.

·                                 The teacher may assign the student detention to be served with the teacher in his/her classroom.

·                                 Teacher may lower citizenship grade.

2nd Tardy

·                                 Teacher will hold a conference with student and find out why he/she is late to class. Student is warned regarding not being late.

·                                 The teacher will assign the student detention to be served with the teacher in his/her classroom.

·                                 Teacher will lower citizenship grade.

3rd & 4th Tardies

·                                 Teacher will hold a conference with student and find out why he/she is late to class. Student is warned regarding not being late.

·                                 The teacher will assign the student detention to be served with the teacher in his/her classroom.

·                                 Teacher will contact home and make the parent/guardian aware of the problem.

·                                 Teacher will lower citizenship grade.

5th and subsequent Tardies

·                                 Teacher will inform the counselor via a referral and Connections teacher.

·                                 Counselor will assign consequences (Saturday School, Suspension etc.).

·                                 Counselor will contact home and make the parent/guardian aware of the problem.

·                                 Saturday school may be assigned.

·                                 Habitual tardiness and defiance of school rules may require referral to District Counselor for possible alternative school placement.

·                                 Teacher will lower citizenship grade.

18 year old students

Eighteen-year-old students must continue to abide by the school's policies and regulations. Eighteen-year-old students living at home and supported by parents are not permitted to excuse their own absences or sign field trip forms.

Unassigned Periods

In the event that a student does not have a class during a period of the day (late start or early dismissal), the student may not loiter on campus.  Students with a late start or early dismissal must be off campus until their classes begin, or be in a supervised location.

Closed Campus

San Diego High Educational Complex has a closed campus, as do all high schools in our district since 1996.  Unless a student has a schedule with a late start or an early dismissal, in which case the student will have a pass indicating their schedule, he/she must remain on campus.  Students may not leave campus during lunchtime.  Leaving campus without appropriate permission is considered a Truancy.

Leaving Campus

Students with a shortened day must obtain a pass from the school office indicating their schedule.  The pass will be valid for the semester in which it is issued.

Students who need to leave campus for medical or legal reasons must obtain a "blue slip."  Parents must call or send a note with the student to the School Clerk in room 806.  The School Clerk will issue a "blue slip" which will permit the student to leave campus at the date and time indicated on the pass.

Leaving campus without appropriate permission is considered a Truancy.

Saturday School

Saturday school is an academic environment.  Students must do work from their classes the entire time.  Saturday school is an alternative to suspension and may be assigned as a result of excessive Tardies or Truancies.  The school Code of Conduct will be in force at Saturday school.  Failure to attend Saturday school may result in a suspension.  Saturday school will clear Tardies and Truancies.  In the event of clearing Truancies, make-up work will be allowed at the teachers discretion.

Detention

Teachers will assign before school, after school or lunch detention at their discretion for violations of class rules.  Not attending a detention will result in a referral to the counselor and Saturday school being assigned.
